    • I loved what I read in the reviews about this budgeting workbook, then I received mine... multiple pages were cut off. I attached a few pictures to show what my item looked like
    • I love this budgeting workbook and is excited to start using it. Evem with technology I just prefer to write down my expenses...
    • My only dislike of this product is out of laziness it has no printed dates in it so you fill EVERYTHING in yourself, except it does have the days of the week and highly visible self explanatory areas for you to fill the timeline in. As I said, that con is only out of laziness. The good side to that is that each month has 5 weeks to it so you can start at any point in the year and it works just fine. You can even buy it, forget it in a corner somewhere, and still use it later down the road since you fill dates in yourself. It has 12 months, has room for all your bills, and it has room in the back for notes that I use to keep track of my debts as I pay them down. I also use the notes section that is with each week to highlight if I spent too much of any particular expense to get better at said budget. It really is great (especially for beginners)!
    • I absolutely love it!! It’s perfect because I always prefer writing things down, technology isn’t always accurate and frustrates me.
    • I like the layout of this budget book, simple, clear, and has plenty of spaces to write. I knocked the product three stars due to the paper quality. The pages are thin, ink and writing will show through the next page. Would have been perfect if this budget was printed on a thicker paper.
    • Perfect for the average home accountant. I just wish there were more month budget pages vs. weekly expense pages. It truly helps me keep track of due dates and how much we spend since we pay in cash for almost everything. I will be ordering another book next year.
    • love that i can put in the month and yea.
    • Such a helpful tool to keep you organized financially. Everything is already done for you you just have to fill in the blanks. Really helps you stay on top of bills and finances! It’s also great quality.

A collection of poems and stories inspired by wild spaces and endurance running. Shifting the narrative from the tired trope centering around the white man conquering a gritty race or mountain, Run Wild & Be explores the female experience embracing freedom and self love through her time spent running long outside. Drawing inspiration from a 4000 mile run across the United States, this book weaves readers through tiny mountain towns, into the desert, and sprawling metropolises, while noting gender inequities, power imbalances, changing goals, and morphing identities.

Autism in women and girls is still not widely understood, and is often misrepresented or even overlooked. This graphic novel offers an engaging and accessible insight into the lives and minds of autistic women, using real-life case studies.

The charming illustrations lead readers on a visual journey of how women on the spectrum experience everyday life, from metaphors and masking in social situations, to friendships and relationships and the role of special interests.

Fun, sensitive and informative, this is a fantastic resource for anyone who wishes to understand how gender affects autism, and how to create safer supportive and more accessible environments for women on the spectrum.

"Camouflage: The Hidden Lives of Autistic Women is a completely necessary teaching tool, for kids and adults alike. This nonfiction guide beautifully and intellectually illustrates how autism manifests in women and how women’s experiences are often completely different from men’s.

The artwork is very modern and adds a lot to the story. The style makes it easier to understand these women’s experiences through a variety of panel layouts and a combination of dialogue, visual aids, and artistic representation of the facts.

The stories in Camouflage are extremely empowering, and as a guide, this is a great start to understanding the complexities of autism.

Camouflage The Hidden Lives of Autistic Women eBook Sarah Bargiela Sophie Standing Reviews

    • The full title of this graphic novel should give you a pretty strong idea of what it covers. It’s all about autistic women, their differences from the typical expectations of autism, and how that results in them blending in better (and thus being less likely to be identified and/or diagnosed).
There were a lot of things I didn’t know about autism in women that I learned while reading this. It was incredibly informative, while still being very approachable.
I like that they chose to talk about the subject in a visual way, as it made everything feel more casual and comfortable to talk about. It felt less like I was reading a textbook and more like I was reading about real people (which was actually the case).
I found this to be a very informative, and enlightening graphic novel. It was nice to take a break from reading fiction and instead learn something true and important.
    • Camouflage by Sarah Bargiela is a free NetGalley e-comicbook that I read in late February.

Exploring concepts through the experiences of 4 autistic women in comic book form, like the belief that girls and women are less likely to be diagnosed due to their brains supposedly wired for empathy and being able to echo social cues more effectively; consistency in habit and routine; seeking/avoiding sensory activities and having keen interests; internalizing emotions and masking one’s identity in order to appear normal; developing assertiveness during friendships and relationships; and finding community within their diagnosis. The palette offered heathered/spotty pastel hues with focal points of coral, hunter green and black, and, altogether, it was too short and I wanted more!
    • Camouflage The Hidden Lives of Autistic Women is a completely necessary teaching tool, for kids and adults alike.

NOTE I was provided a free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest, unbiased review.
    • While the text in Camouflage The Hidden Lives of Autistic Women is probably comparable to a magazine article or blog post in length (and therefore is a very quick read), the illustrations fill out the information and help to humanize this topic.

We get to hear from a few different autistic women about some of the challenges and differences that they face in life. There is also some information about the differences in the ways that autistic men and autistic women present their symptoms, which can lead to women being underdiagnosed.

Despite its short length, I found it fairly informative and a good resource for anyone who wants to learn more about the gender differences in autistic people, and the lived experiences of autistic women.

(Thanks to NetGalley for the review copy.)
    • This is well-researched, impeccably presented GN about how autism can present itself in young girls and woman. Through its clever use of illustration to help readers understand concepts and words they may be unfamiliar with, to its inclusion of stories from those with Autism--this book has helped me understand a topic I believe I knew all too well. This GN toes the line between presenting readers with enough information to feel like they understand more about the topic without feeling bogged down too much scholarly language. As a twin to a sister with Autism, I feel like I can understand her better and that's an invaluable gift.
    • I didn't know what to expect going into reading this and I came away surprised. I learned a lot about autism in women! I would give this book 3.5 stars.

This was a great medium for teaching about the subject matter and I enjoyed the anecdotal approach. One big hang-up I have about the book is how gender essentialist it is about sex differences. The author makes overarching generalizations about the societally influenced behavior of cis-men and cis-women (assumed that this is what she is talking about, as she does not indicate otherwise) without many citations to support these assertions. I almost stopped reading because of the generalizations - aren't we past an antiquated science supporting the separation of gender into two categories?

Other than the gendered nonsense, I enjoyed this book and the information it offered.

Thanks to Netgalley for the advanced copy of Camouflage and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
    • Obviously there’s only so much information that you can fit into a fifty page graphic novel, but I think this is a great jumping off point. Bargiela uses research studies with the personal experiences of women diagnosed to be on the spectrum to bring us informative graphic and stories about women with autism. She covers the difference between behaviors in men and women, likely a cause for why women may be under-diagnosed. I read a similar article in the past about the difference in behaviors for ADHD and I find it interesting to compare the differences (and also distressing that women can get ignored because they don’t check the “usual” boxes). This quick, easy to digest guide is a good starting point for understanding different women. Thanks to NetGalley and Jessica Kingsley Publishers for the eARC.

The Last Whalers The Life of an Endangered Tribe in a Land Left Behind Doug Bock Clark Reviews

    • From what I know of early modern history, in the first few centuries after the discovery of the New World there was a distinct literary genre of missionaries who acted as proto-anthropologists by narrating the life and customs of native peoples. After the missionaries came the real anthropologists and then, more recently, the activists.

Often this genre has suffered not only from exoticism but also contained a good deal of egoism. While continuing in this tradition, the author of The Last Whalers thankfully focuses on the Lamelerans and mostly crops himself out of the picture. While there is some rather mundane philosophizing about the need to preserve a diversity of cultures, most of the book deals with the personalities and mores of this fascinating sliver of humanity.

Lamaleran culture revolves around the hunting of whales and so a lot of the work is devoted to blow by blow descriptions of harpooning and the ultimate slaying of these animals. Readers expecting typical anthropological data like rituals, myths and social hierarchies will be mostly disappointed.

What one does get is a depiction of a tribe torn between adherence to ancestral ways and the possibilities of modernity. The extent to which one will enjoy this book will vary depending on one’s interest in primitive civilizations—particularly those which are hunter based—and the extent to which one is drawn in by the personal stories the author narrates.

Personally, I thought the author has nobly contributed to a somewhat ignoble literary tradition. He has depicted a tribe still caught in a mostly prehistoric way of life without sentimentalizing their personalities or writing a hagiographic account of their way of life.

Clearly, the Lamalerans have not had a major effect on world history. But the author succeeds in describing their unique culture to such an extent that a compelling case is made for the need to preserve humankind’s cultural diversity.

If descriptions of far-off and completely different civilizations are to one’s liking than the Last Whalers is probably a good choice. If one is prepared for bloody hunting scenes and short shrift given to traditional cultural topics then the extraordinary actions of the author in learning the Lamaleran dialect and living among them for extensive periods will lead to a rather gripping narrative. In short, a unique contribution to ethnography that is written for the public and not just for anthropologists. Well worth reading.
    • The Last Whalers is an absolutely extraordinary work. Clark’s portrayal of the Lamalerans, a hunter-gatherer tribe inhabiting a remote Indonesian island, is both fascinating and moving. He expertly shows how the Lamalerans hunt the largest carnivore in history, the sperm whale, using centuries-old technology. By having lived amongst the tribe across three years, the author is able to describe the hunts in stunning and dramatic detail, with the insight of someone intimately familiar with not only the mechanics of the process, but also the history, culture, and people of Lamalera.

The stories of the Lamalerans themselves are even more gripping--from a young orphaned whaler waiting for his big break to an aging legendary harpooner struggling to understand his son’s resistance to the traditional way of life. They bravely stand up to the forces of modernization, largely refusing modern technology that would make the hunts easier and far less dangerous, and relying on bartering and gift-giving instead of paper currency. They hold on to the ways of their ancestors, believing that their tradition--however inconvenient--contains their essence, and that by giving it up, they may lose what it means for them to live.

The Last Whalers reminds us to consider what we may be losing as we welcome the latest technology and conveniences with open arms. As modernization and globalization threaten the Lamaleran way of life, Clark richly illustrates how they navigate balancing tradition and progress in a way both exotic and familiar.

No doubt, the ways of the Lamalerans are vanishing, as are those of thousands of other indigenous people around the world. The Last Whalers details the lives and culture of a fascinating tribe while also provoking us to contemplate where we come from and what may be lost without a conscious effort. The forces of globalization, for better or worse, are unstoppable. But The Last Whalers helps us pause to celebrate the diversity and resilience of humanity that the Lamalerans exemplify. Reading it was an incredibly moving--and much needed--journey.
    • This is not a review of the book, but only of the Preview ebook offered. There is no way to just buy this ebook on . You can only get a free preview, and if you then want the full ebook then at the end of the preview ebook there’s a button that says “Buy it now!”. But it doesn’t ever tell you what the ebook costs, or if clicking on “Buy it now!” will automatically purchase the book if you have One Click turned on, or if it will let you see the price and then let you confirm you want it. So no thank you. I now have the ebook on Hold from my library. If this is a new tactic of ’s I think my ebook buying days are over because I’m not buying ebooks without first knowing what I’m going to be charged for them.
    • Remarkable. Clark paints a vivid and unflinching portrait of life for a community in Indonesia that is - in ways large and small - wrestling with their hunter-gatherer past and an encroaching modern culture. Rather than romanticize the indigenous for its own sake (as many Westerners seem prone to), Clark allows the community to share their own multi-faceted views on their lives...as they were, as they are, and as they imagine them to be. A true accomplishment.
    • The Last Whalers often reads like a novel as individual villagers share their lives. This a a book about people whose traditional way of life is hanging on by a finger nail. Modern methods of whale and manta ray fishing have almost overcome the practices of centuries. Spiritual beliefs wither away but have not quite expired. These isolated villages on islands in the Sunda Sea are now a part of today's world. This carefully researched book memorializes them and their inhabitants.
