The Rhine Ben Coates 9781473665095 Books Reviews

  • This is an enjoyable book to prepare for a cruise on the Rhine. However, the few general maps at the beginning of the book do not answer the reader's constant question, "Where is he?" If the author had included maps pinpointing the location of the stories and descriptions, then the reader would not be lost. Also, the copy needs another edit to eliminate some errors (pp. 48, 51, 76, and 82 for starters). On p. 26, second paragraph, first sentence the word should be "led," not "lead."
  • Ben Coates' "The Rhine" takes readers on a lesser-traveled, lesser-celebrated journey along one of the most important (and arguably most beautiful) rivers in the world. Throughout the book, Coates backs up this assertion that the Rhine is an underappreciated river with a mix of historical and contemporary stories that will make travelers (both armchair and otherwise) clamoring to explore more of this wonderful river.
  • The author combines a travelogue of the Rhine river with plenty of historical information on each of the areas and towns he visits. Sometimes he dives too deep in the history and sometimes his European Liberal bias shows.
  • As an American lacking a cultural, political, or proper historical understanding of the Rhineland; this book offered a brief outsider perspective and synopsis of the past, present, and future of this beautiful, amazing region.
  • I read this book while traveling the Rhine on a riverboat cruise. I found it both humorous and insightful as Bob Coates is irreverent but observant. It is definitely not your dry travelogue. Example The high prices in Switzerland were like "shopping in a hotel mini-bar." A great blend of geography, history, and current events.
  • This is a very easy and interesting read about travelling reveNue river. If you have been in parts of all of it you will enjoy the stories and visualizations. If you are planning a Rhine tour, all of part, this will be a very useful brief overview of facts, history and places to see. A fun and escapism read
  • This is not a travel guide, but rather a collection of stories. I bought it with the idea that it would help navigate the riverboat towns along the Rhine. Very little help in that regard.
